Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. Every week, they post a new Top Ten topic and other bloggers respond with their own lists.
This week’s topic was hard for me. I usually connect with characters, or if I don’t, I DNF the book–or just forget all about it.
- Lara Jean from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before — I like these books, but LJ annoyed me. I could never put a finger on exactly what made her “not click” with me, but her narration always bothered me.
- Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter — Don’t kill me! I just never fell in love with her. I understand why she appeals to so many people, but she struck me as spazzy, and I felt like she got in the way a lot of the time.
- Lola from Lola and the Boy Next Door — Don’t get me wrong–I loved this book. But Lola was a bit too “out there” for me to every really understand her.
- Tariq from The Wrath and the Dawn — I blame a lack of backstory for my complete apathy toward Tariq. Seriously, he was annoying, and I was so in love with Khalid that I just wanted to bat Tariq and his stupid emotions out of the way.
- Shannon from Aces Up — Nope, I just hated this protagonist. She was ditsy and made awful life choices. (My full rant here.)
- Cameron from Going Bovine — As a rule, I love Libba Bray, but Cameron wasn’t a good protagonist for me. His slacker, DGAF character put me off when I tried to reread this book.
- Violet from Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea — God, this girl is annoying. It might just be that the entire book is heavy on the Instalove and light on strong plot elements, but Violet came off as shallow, flighty, and random for me.
- Anna from The Sweet Trilogy — This girl’s personality was all over the place–she’s the ultimate good girl, but she’s also a wild partier, and with a heavy religious streak even though she is literally part devil. I enjoyed the books but there was something off about her personality.

AHH! I give up. Honestly, I can’t think of any more. I guess this is a Top Eight.

I agree, Lola is strange. But I can identify with her desire to understand herself–to be truly her, and no one else. She goes about it in ways I never would, but still I respect the journey.

I definitely enjoyed the story and respected her journey, I just wouldn’t be friends with her in real life. 🙂

That’s such a good way to describe her! She’d be interesting to view from afar, but having her as a close friend would wear me out… 🙂

Ok the only one I’ve read on here is Harry Potter so I’ll defend my love of Luna! Lol I feel like everyone just sees her as this weird quirky girl and she was that yes. But she also was a strong female character in her own right. She didn’t give a shit what anyone thought and would the right thing to help her friends often when no one else would no matter the consequences. I think we need more Lunas in the world. I had Cho and Ginny on my list. Lol!

Lol Cho was not a lovable character but I would probably end up being friends with her.
I never had definite feelings for Ginny, but I found her cute and likeable and wished we’d gotten to see more of her.
I admired Luna’s “take no shit” attitude, but I never connected with her. She’s strong and important to the story, but in terms of characters that I would want to sit with at lunch, Luna would not make the list.

I agree with Lola! She was okay (like I don’t dislike her character or anything), but I didn’t really feel all the things she was feeling and half the time I was annoyed with her!

In the beginning I liked her! I did, I thought she was cool and funky and different, but somewhere in the middle I lost her. *Scratches head* in a way it makes sense since she got caught in indecisiveness etc, but on the whole, it brought down the likeability of the novel. Makes me kind of not really into reading the last book (I’ve heard that Isla is a little…paranoid?)

I liked Isla more than Lola, personally. I guess she could be described as paranoid but it felt more like a real girl getting freaked out by her first intense romantic relationship. I “got” Isla in a way that I never got Lola, so I liked the third book more overall. 🙂

That’s an interesting opinion! I remember liking Anna (though I was a little *don’t go after a taken guy!!*), Lola not so much, since Cricket was such a nice guy! And Isla–well I’ve yet to read it! I think I’m a little more inclined to read it some time soon. It’s funny I usually don’t have such a hard time with deciding whether or not to read the last book based on previous books. It’s usually a ‘yes read it!’ even if the previous books weren’t that great. Which is weird since I don’t dislike Anna’s or Lola’s book, just didn’t always connect. But well!

I think the appeal for the series is the emotional and interesting plots. Even if the characters aren’t overly relatable, the stories themselves are compelling.

Very true! I know I couldn’t put down either book most of the time haha. Stephanie Perkins did manage to hook me into the end.
