Poetry: Clear as Day

I got new glasses this week

(“Oh my gosh,

The trees have leaves!”)

Everything in focus—

Hadn’t noticed how much

I couldn’t see

How much I hadn’t seen

It’s so great

In the morning

Acne scars and frizzy hair

In perfect focus

And at school

The boredom and exhaustion and bitterness

On everyone’s face

So clear

Turned on the news

Wars and protests

Bullets and clouds of burning gas

Peace advocates guarded by gunmen

Death tolls snapped into focus

Not just statistics anymore

Oh, how glad I am to have new glasses.

Author’s note: I actually did get new glasses, guys! They’re super cute but it’s kind of freaking me out how much I can see (my prescription had been slightly off for a while).
